GENERAL INFORMATION

The purpose of Renaissance in Motion is to foster, within this historic area, a creative environment in the fields of art and architecture, literature and academics, music and dance, film and the cultural history of Harlem, and showcase talent through salons and concerts, bringing downtown chic to uptown groove. Our presenters have included the architectural historian and preservationist, Michael Henry Adams; the award-winning novelist, Brian Keith Jackson; and one of the pioneers of poetry recited with jazz, Barry Wallenstein, accompanied by jazz legend, John Hicks; the Grammy award-winning songwriter, Gordon Chambers, and the inimitable Eartha Kitt.

We have also inaugurated a tradition of the yearly crowning of the "Queen or King of Harlem." This celebration honors a luminary that has had great and lasting impact on the artistic and cultural scene of Harlem, and the world by extension. Our first Queen of Harlem was Eartha Kitt, whom we feted in a most unforgettable summer-night's party.

There have been many more individuals who have lectured, performed, and brought beauty and culture to Harlem, and have made Renaissance in Motion's events an inspirational experience.

Each lecture is held in one of the most exquisite restored brownstones of Harlem, and each is followed by a cocktail party. Attendance to each lecture is very limited to keep the exclusive and social character of these events, so we always ask for a RSVP and pre-payment.

The house typically opens at 6:30 P.M. for an informal tour. The lecture or reading starts at 7:00, and is followed by a cocktail party from 7:45 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. An optional prix fixe dinner at a nearby restaurant is often available at the conclusion of a lecture. Details may change, and we let you know exact times in the invitations, which we send by email. All fees collected this year go towards the remuneration of lecturers and the cocktail parties.
